Forever Autumn

Happy (nearly) September, all.

This one’s going out early, as I’m about to go largely offline for the next couple of weeks. Details next month… or not. One last chance for stragglers out there to say if you still want to receive this by e-mail… though if I really like you, I’ll still forgive your not responding.

I have a love/hate relationship with September. My inner child remembers the sense of wonder at the new school year, with empty notebooks, sharp pencils and new clothes, of new beginnings and old acquaintances grown a bit taller. There’s still the promise of Indian Summer, and the turning of the leaves. And yet, there’s the sense that summer is over, of cold and turbulent weather, of green grass turning brown and premonitions of death and decay. Those of us who commute in the mornings may note the faint return of Orion to the morning skies, as the nights grow a bit longer. His return is a bit premature, though, as the return to Standard Time is yet to come.

I note with sadness the passing of Isaac Bonewits, definitely one of the American pioneers in the neo-pagan movement, on August 12. I was just reading his Real Magic, and of his thoughts about the afterlife at that time that paralleled my own. Many of you have seen his “Advanced Bonewits Cult Danger Evaluation Frame” (ABCDEF), which is not only an excellent asset for newcomers, but the basis of a good ethical code for any group. You can read his official obit at http://neopagan.net/blog/

September's Birthdays: Lee G., Carla M., Tiger Lily, Cat B., and probably some of my Facebook friends. Let me know if I’ve missed yours.
