Remember Florida! Go Vote!

Happy October, everyone.

Just another reminder that the Evergreen introductory classes begin on October 15. If you’re interested and haven’t been in touch with us, there’s still time to sign up.

Both the U.S. and Canada are now in the midst of federal elections, and this week the U.S. economic sky seems to be in danger of falling. As I’ve written before, it’s tough to be anything but Conservative in Alberta, and even the Conservatives frequently don’t bother to vote because they’re supposedly a shoo-in anyway. For those of you who believe your vote doesn’t count, look back to Florida in the 2000 campaign, and see how close they came to not having Dubya in the White House these past eight years....

Herewith is my somewhat naive, simplistic, biased, idealist-turned-pessimist guide to the four major parties in Western Canada:

Vote Conservative if you’re happy with the status quo, think that the free enterprise system will take care of everyone so that governments won’t have to, that what’s good for business is good for Canada, that Stephen Harper is a strong leader cum sensitive New Age guy, and that Stéphane Dion is a dweeb.

Vote Liberal if you think that government has to take responsibility for social programs, that the responsibility for the environment must be reasonably balanced with the economy, that a pit bull in a fuzzy sweater is still a pit bull, and that you can tell that Harper is telling a really big lie whenever he stands up and buttons his jacket.

Vote NDP if you’re heavily in favour of giving the power to the Little Guy, believe strongly in social justice programs, belong to a union, and think that corporations are inherently evil. And if you think that Harper is a Republican, Dion is a dweeb, and Layton is the new sheriff in town.

Vote Green if you think that the environment has to come first, no matter what. And if you think Elizabeth May is hot.

But don’t take my word for it. Check out http://www.conservative.ca, http://www.liberal.ca, http://www.ndp.ca, or http://www.greenparty.ca . Then get out there and vote on October 14!

A couple of updates....

The word on Calgary Pagan Pride Day is that it is a no-go this year. There is still the pathway cleanup at Eau Claire on September 13, but hopefully CPPD will be back next year.

Brendan Myers will be doing two workshops for the Covenant of Gaia: one on Pagan Folk Proverbs and Wisdom Teachings, on Friday, Sept. 19, which is open to COGCOA members and their invited guests, and one on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 3:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Calgary, on Ethics in Celtic and European Mythology. Information is on the COGCOA website at http://www.cogcoa.ab.ca/ And of course, there is the brunch on Sunday sponsored by Awen Grove, as previously posted.

Blessings,
Hergest
