Happy New Year, everyone.  I'm a little late this month due to technical difficulties, but I'm still here.

Starhawk will be in Calgary at the end of November for a conference at the CommunityWise Resource Centre (formerly the Old Y) on "Consensus Building: participatory governance and grassroots organizing".  (For info, visit http://communitywise.net/events/ )  While she's here, she will also be doing an event on "The Heart and Soul of Permaculture" at the Unitarian Church of Calgary on Thursday, November 29 at 7:00 p.m.; tickets at http://starhawkcalgaryevent-efbevent.eventbrite.ca/ .  For those who can't make that, she's also doing a reading of her new book, The Earth Path, at Memorial Park Library on Friday, November 30 from 7-9 p.m..  For info and tickets for the reading, go to the Communitywise site listed above.

 

On an unrelated topic, is November becoming a "silly season", at least in Canada? As the weather worsens, it seems we need distractions: the CFL playoffs, Movember, National Novel Writing Month... and probably this year, women clutching their copies of Fifty Shades of Grey will be making their way to the Naughty but Nice Sex Show. For me, I'm still in the middle of a war zone, so distractions are not welcome here.  My "uncool" (but face-balancing) cookie-duster remains on this month, and novel-writing will again have to wait. In fact, I'm pretty much giving up on being part of mainstream society for the duration. Becoming a recluse in my old age begins to look good.

Rapture 2013 and Rooms Celestial

Happy October, everyone.

You read it here first!  Once we survive the winter solstice 2012 “End of the World”, those waiting for the Rapture will be looking for a new date.  Just in time, a new comet has been discovered (or perhaps the return of an old “great comet”).  The Australian press is reporting comet C/2012 S1 (“ISON”) will pass very close to the Sun between Nov. 2013 and Jan. 2014, leaving (potentially) a spectacular trail. If all goes well, we’ll have a lovely showing that Christmas.  Ah, “signs and portents”… I’ve been waiting for another good comet to show up!

As you’ve probably heard, until October 20, there will be a rare opportunity for anyone curious to see the inside of a Mormon temple to do so, without being Mormon.  The new Mormon temple in Royal Oak will be having an Open House before its dedication on October 28. Admission is free, but you need to reserve a date and time.

Several years ago after it had undergone some renovations, Margarian and I visited the temple in Cardston, with elements by Frank Lloyd Wright, and found it a fascinating glimpse into the Mysteries of the Mormon religion. If the same rules (and general layout) apply, you'll have to wear booties to cover your shoes so as not to soil the carpets (so low heels preferred), and while there are a lot of stairs, if memory serves the flights would be short, with numerous stops, as you spiral your way up to the Celestial Room. I understand the building is also wheelchair-accessible.

Congratulations to Kellie R, who received her Evergreen initiation from Heather Dawn on September 15!  A long-awaited First for both!
